History

More Than Pet People

If you have a Rottweiler in your family, you know that few dogs are as affectionate, loyal and protective.

Where do Rottweilers orginate from?

The Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil, Germany

Roman soldiers reached Germania (modern day Germany), and founded a town now called Rottweil in AD 73. The town gets its name from the red-tiled (“rote wil”) roofs of the ancient roman structures in the area, unearthed and documented hundreds of years later.

Rottweilers get their name from Rottweil. It’s often said that cattle herders in the area would tie their money pouches around their Rottweiler’s neck to keep it safe.

It was in Rottweil that the dogs became historically known as the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, or “butcher’s dogs”. For hundreds of years, Rottweilers were used for guarding and herding cattle, as well as pulling carts laden with meat and other products to markets.

The Rottweiler Supporting Cattle Trade

Rottweilers became crucial to commerce in the region, helping with all areas of the cattle trade long after the Romans had gone. Their smart, calm and strong characteristics made them the perfect working dogs of the time.

New Dog / Puppy Shopping List

More Than Pet People

Bed - choose a bed for your dog that is large enough for them to grow into, with plenty of room to turn around. Go for one that can be washed easily and will dry quickly – you’ll be surprised how grubby they will get!
Food and water bowls -  stainless-steel or metal feeding and water bowls for your dog. Plastic bowls will be too tempting to chew!
Collar - It’s a legal requirement for your dog to wear a collar. The collar needs to fit your dog comfortably – you should be able to fit two fingers between your dog’s neck and the collar – but is not so loose that it will come over his or her head. The collar needs to be durable and washable – but this doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. There are plenty of designs to choose from to find a collar to match your dog’s personality.
Harness - A dog harness is optional but it can give you more control over your dog when out walking and a kind alternative to a collar and lead. There are different styles of harnesses – front clips or back clips.
Leads - Choose a lead that is strong enough for your dog. You might want a couple of different leads – a short one for when you need to keep your dog close to you, and an extendable or retractable lead to give dogs a bit more freedom to run around and have a good sniff.
Food -start off by feeding your dog what they’ve been used to. Ask your puppy’s breeder or dog rehoming centre for information about this and stock up on a good few day’s supply of the same food to get you started. It’s OK to change your dog’s diet – but this needs to be done gradually, over 4-5 days, so that they don’t get an upset tummy.
Our kennel feeds all weaned pups on Classic Puppy Montego, pets mince and water. Puppies grow at different rates. To get the most out of their diet, puppies must eat today for the dog they will be tomorrow.  Classic Puppy large to giant breed premium formulation is tailored to provide pups with everything they need to get a great start to a long healthy life.
Toys - There’s a great selection of toys to buy for fun games with your dog. Stock up on balls for games of fetch. Invest in some rope toys for a game of tug.
Grooming brush - invest in a good grooming brush to get rid of old hair and dried mud. You will need to do this every couple of days. Your dog may also benefit from going to a dog groomer for a wash and grooming session.
Treats - you’ll soon get used to having your pockets stuffed full dog treats. You can buy dog treats or you may prefer to research online for recipes to make your own. Peanut butter is a hit with dogs (in moderation). Did you know that dogs can eat apples, carrots, bread and cheese? But there’s lots of things they can’t eat, such as chocolate and grapes, which are poisonous to dogs.

Caring for Your Rottweiler Dog

More Than Pet People

Rottweilers are loyal, loving family dogs who need daily interaction with their people, moderate exercise and good nutrition.

Home: About Us

Rottweiler Temperament

A well-bred Rottweiler is a calm, courageous and confident dog. To their trusted human family members, this pup may be a silly clown, eager to play while ready to protect from any perceived danger. Despite their size, your Rottweiler may long to be a lap dog and squeeze as much of themselves onto your lap as possible. This intelligent and extremely protective dog needs a strong, firm hand. The breed can be very protective of family and property, but properly socialized Rottweilers can be good family dogs.

Do Rottweilers shed?

Rottweilers have a double coat and are moderate year-round shedders, with heavier shedding taking place in the fall and spring. To reduce shedding, brush your Rottie once or twice each week, and daily when they are losing their undercoat. Bathing a Rottweiler is not recommended more than once a month, and shaving a Rottweiler is not recommended at all.

Exercise

More Than Pet People

Rottweilers are moderately active dogs. At least 30 minutes of exercise,  brisk walking, running or a game of fetch, is recommended for healthy adult dogs.

Some Rottweilers love water, and swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise.

Rottweiler puppies are not good jogging or running partners. They should be fully grown (about 15 months old) before engaging in vigorous exercise to allow their bones and joints to grow normally.

Chewing is an important mental exercise that can be supported by giving your Rottweiler chew toys, which promote healthy chewing and mental stimulation.
